Grande Prairie's rich history

Grande Prairie is the heart of Alberta's Peace Country, which was named for nearby Peace River. The first European settlers arrived here in 1770, making their living as fur traders. By the early 20th century, Grande Prairie was mainly a farming community, winning awards for the quality of our wheat and Timothy seed. The discovery of oil in Leduc in 1947 led to oil and gas exploration around Peace Country, and our population grew considerably. In 1958, Grande Prairie was incorporated as a city and we continue to grow today as the service centre for the entire Peace region.
